He underlined the importance of properly mitigating

various social conflicts, and said efforts must be made to address legitimate and lawful concerns to safeguard public int

erests, and also guide the public in voicing their concerns in a law-based manner to maintain social order.

Strong pressure must be maintained to crack down on crimes such as organized gang activity, violent and terroristic cri

mes, as well as those related to fraud, robbery, food and drug safety, and environmental protection, Xi said.

Calling social fairness and justice a lifeline for judicial and law enforcement work, Xi called for improving the mec

hanism of the use of power in law enforcement as well as the supervision over such powers.

Efforts should be made to help the public feel fairness and justice in every case, Xi said.

He also urged public security staff to improve their work so that human rights can be guarant

eed while crime is fought, and fairness can be ensured while efficiency of law enforcement is pursued.

In Nanjing, the local railway authority has put more tra

ains into service. It said residents in the city would likely make about 340,000 trips by train on Friday.

Other branches of the railway system have also launched more runs to handle the increase of holiday passengers.

Tomb Sweeping Day, also known as Qingming Festival, fell on Friday this year. It i

s a traditional Chinese day on which people pay tribute to deceased family members,

friends and national heroes. Chinese people have used the day for spring outings since ancient times.

In recent years, the number of Chinese travelers, to both domestic and foreign destinations, d

uring the Tomb Sweeping Day holiday has increased annually, and most of them travel by rail for some or all of the j

ourney. For destinations within China, railways offer lower prices and more choices than airlines.

At present, China operates more than 131,000 kilometers of tracks. That fig

ure includes more than 29,000 km of high-speed rail, two-thirds of the global total.

Last year, China invested more than 338 billion yuan ($50 billion) in the construct

ion of 26 new railways and opened new lines totaling 4,683 km, most of them high-speed.

hina will continue to suspend extra tariffs on

The State Council said on Sunday that China would continue to suspend additional tariffs on US

vehicles and auto parts after April 1, in a goodwill gesture following a US decision to delay tariff hikes on Chinese imports.

In December, China said it would suspend additional 25 percent tariffs on US-made vehi

cles and auto parts for three months, following a truce in a trade war between the world’s two largest economies.

The State Council, or China’s cabinet, said the move was aimed at “continuing to create a good atmosphere for the ongoing trade negotiations between both sides”.

elt and Road Initiative serves to promote multilateral cooperation: China Daily editorial

t is natural for such a big international project as China’s Belt and Road Initiative to be ta

ken by some with a grain of salt. But the fact that 129 countries and 29 international organizations

have so far signed cooperation documents with China on the initiative shows that such views are in the minority.

The most common charges laid at China’s door are the Belt and Road is a debt trap and it is all about Chi

na’s strategic objectives. It has also been called a “scheme to split European Union”. And other labels will certainly appear.
